Today is an Auston Matthews appreciation podcast! Mike DiStefano and David Morassutti relive a special night for Matthews and the Toronto Maple Leafs at the NHL Awards(1:55). Mike explains why Matthews winning the Ted Lindsay Award was more impressive than the Hart Trophy (4:45). Mike and Dave go through the Hart Trophy ballot and give their thoughts on Matthews getting most of the first-place votes and some of the interesting names to get a vote (9:55). They move on to the Norris Trophy and how close the gap was between Cale Makar and Roman Josi (26:38). They also look at Igor Shesterkin running away with the Vezina but some other goalies getting some love from the NHL GMs (33:02).
Mike and Dave discuss Chris Johnston’s report about Jack Campbell and how much he’s looking to get this off-season which makes it unlikely to see the netminder return (37:22). With the amount Campbell wants to get paid, could Sergei Bobrovsky be a better fit if the Florida Panthers take back salary (43:45)? To end the show, Mike and Dave explain why it looks like Ilya Mikheyev is likely going to price himself out of Toronto and why that isn’t the worst thing in the end (46:40).
